Location and How to Get There
There are various ways to get to Selous including land travel from Dar es Salaam, train travel from Dar es Salaam to Kisaki Railroad Station, or flights from Dar es Salaam, Ruaha, Manyara, Zanzibar, and Mikumi.
Wildlife and Natural Highlights
Selous Game Reserve is the largest game reserve in the world. It is even bigger than Rwanda and Burundi combined. Selous is a special corridor for animal movements connecting Selous Game Reserve with the Niassa Game Reserve in Mozambique. Its savannah attracts the African wild dog, Selous zebras, Nyasaland wildebeest, Cape buffalo, Lichtenstein hartebeest, huge herds of elephants, and large groups hippos and crocodiles.
High Season
The dry season (June and October) is the best time for game viewing. When it is dry, animals congregate around Selous’s rivers and lakes. Vegetation also thins out during the dry season making it easier to see the animals.
Activities
Attractions at Selous include African boat safaris on the Rufiji River, fly camping trips, birding, and walking safaris. Boating safaris set Selous apart from other Tanzanian parks. The park is quieter than the majority of parks in Tanzania.
